Gallery exhibition: July 13 - August 11, 2012

Juror's statement:

Water is a subject near and dear to me. I have spent almost thirty years exploring the mesmerizing qualities of it – how it can distort, magnify, elongate and reflect and so it was a joy for me to see other photographers exploring it and finding rich and varied approaches. There were many, many wonderful images submitted for this exhibition and that made the selection process very difficult. As I was going through all the submissions I found myself attracted to the photographs that rely on a special way of seeing – of using the water to see in a new way, rather than finding a special subject or event and making a picture of it. It is through the seeing and the exploration, that the image becomes unique and original and can transform an ordinary subject into something extraordinary.

Water. Our most essential element. We are born from it. We cannot live without it. Its beauty captivates us. Its floods devastate us. The PhotoPlace Gallery exhibition WATER features photographs that capture water in all of its myriad physical and metaphorical forms. We are honored that noted photographer and educator Connie Imboden served as the juror for this exhibition. She selected forty photos for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from September 4th through September 29th, 2012. She also chose an additional thirty-five photos for the gallery's "Online Annex." All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.

Connie Imboden's photographs are in the permanent collections of many museums including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The National Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, France, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany and many other public and private collections throughout Europe and the Americas.
