Juror's Statement

It was a pleasure and a challenge to choose from so many interesting and diverse interpretations of the theme of "Things with Wings." When making selections, I was drawn to the images that focused on both the beauty and the strangeness of winged things, ranging from bats to angels. As I looked at these images over and over again, there were some I kept coming back to, some I couldn't get out of my mind, and some that made me laugh or wonder. Thank you to everyone who submitted their wonderful work.

About the Juror

Emma Powell is an assistant professor of art at Colorado College. Powell graduated from the College of Wooster, and received her MFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work often examines photography's history while incorporating historic processes and other devices within the imagery.

"My photographic work focuses on fictional narrative. I create art that visualizes curious scenarios in order to convey a message or feeling instead of a record of a moment. I utilize a range of hand-applied photographic emulsions in order to visualize the distance between fantasy and reality, as well as to make prints that appear as objects instead of windows. The photographic processes I use are chosen intentionally to evoke another place or time that is removed from the every day, adding layers of narrative meaning through historical references or material qualities."

Call for Entries

Birds. Bees. Angels. Airplanes. Bats. Butterflies. Fairies. Dragons. Rocketships. Dragonflies. For this exhibition, we sought images of creatures or creations capable of flight. The sky, and the winged things that might be in it, was the limit. Whether at rest or in the act of flight, any photographs featuring thing with wings were welcome.

We were pleased to have our very own Emma Powell returning to jury this exhibition. Emma chose 40 photographs for display at PhotoPlace Gallery from April 30th through May 30th. She also selected 35 additional photographs for the gallery's Online Annex. All selected work will be included in an exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.
