On the Street
Juror's Statement
It was my honor to serve as juror for PhotoPlace Gallery’s “On The Street” exhibition. The call sought images that capture the beauty, humor, tension, and humanity inherent in everyday moments—photographs that reveal how one observes the world when life is unposed, when light, gesture, and chance align perfectly within a single frame.
The submissions spanned traditional, contemporary, and abstract styles. The selection process was inherently subjective, relying heavily on my intuition and fifteen years of experience conducting portfolio reviews. This work presented a unique challenge: I had to evaluate familiar images with a fresh eye while examining new images as works I wished to know better.
I chose B.D. Colen’s photograph “He Had A Dream - Washington, D.C. Juneteenth, 1968” for the Juror’s Award. This powerful image was taken at the end of the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington, D.C., a movement Martin Luther King Jr. had been planning at the time of his assassination just two months prior.
My very great thanks go to all the artists who shared their work with me and to the wonderful colleagues at PhotoPlace Gallery. This exhibition serves as a vibrant testament to the enduring power of street photography—a mirror reflecting our shared, fleeting humanity. I hope viewers find as much inspiration in these chosen frames as I did during the selection process.
About the Juror
"I work with photographers at all stages of their career, from emerging to established, to help edit, sequence and advise on their exhibitions, books, presentations and photography events.” – Elizabeth Avedon
Call for Entries
“A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you, the less you know.” – Diane Arbus
From fleeting glances to bold confrontations, street photography captures the unscripted rhythm of life. For this exhibition, we invite images that reflect the beauty, humor, tension, and humanity found in everyday moments. Whether shot in a bustling city, a small-town fair, or a quiet rural intersection, we’re looking for photographs that tell stories of people, places, and the pulse of the street.
Show us how you observe the world when life doesn’t pose—when gestures, light, and chance align in a single frame.
We look forward to seeing how you see the street.
We are honored to have Elizabeth Avedon as juror for On the Street. She will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 40 images for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog and remain permanently on our website, and be promoted on social media with links to photographer’s URL.
