Juror's Statement

To define the term "Alternate Realities" would be a difficult task, so I will make reference to a few vocabulary words that passed through my mind while looking at the work submitted to this exhibition:

…'imagination', 'memory', 'parallel dimension', 'personal dreamstate', 'collective subconscious', even 'quantum physics'…

The work that proved strongest to me was that which did not default to the obvious or the clichéd. Evolved work with a clear connection to the theme combined with strength to stand on its own as an image became clearer through many rounds of winnowing.

My hope is that a lively narrative will show itself in a consistent, thought-provoking way when the work is collectively shown together as a group. I feel honored to have travelled through such varied, creative interpretations of this topic.

Call for Entries

Things are not always as they seem. For the juried exhibition Alternative Realities, we sought photographs that broaden the definition of realism in photography to encompass subjects that seem imaginary, mysterious, fictional, magical, or even mystical. While we welcomed work in a variety of alternative processes, we were most interested in compelling images, regardless of the process used to create them.

For Alternative Realities, juror Laura Moya, executive director of Photolucida, selected forty photos for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from Aug. 7th through Sept. 1st, 2012. She also chose an additional thirty-five photos for the Online Gallery.

All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.
